Is there a need for materialist theories of racism?
In this (German-speaking) reading group, we want to deal intensively with materialist theories of racism and approach a critique of mainstream antiracism, which mostly fails to integrate a fundamental critique of capitalism. Texts from the 2022 anthologies “The Diversity of Exploitation” and “Problems of Antiracism” will be included. In addition, there will be a text by the U.S. co-founder of “humanist Marxism”, Raya Dunayevskaya, who has an impressive ability to express complex thoughts on freedom struggles worldwide, trained on Hegel, in language that is universally understood. There will also be a text including views on intersectionality/critical whiteness and postcolonialism so that the critique of this does not take place in a vacuum. These are very much in the public sphere and, therefore, easily accessible to everybody.
Basic knowledge of Marxist categories is helpful as a foundation but not mandatory and can be compensated with a willingness to work through unfamiliar terms. Questions are always welcome, and we will try to answer them together.
